I’m over half way through video #3. I just had to stop and tell you how WONDERFUL it is!! I’m so excited to get my paints on the paper. You do a fabulous job explaining what is going through your mind! Also, the color key is perfect!! Sorry, I had just a bit of overwhelming excitement! I had to spill it out!

I have enjoyed this experience more than any other class I’ve taken!!!

That meeting session online we had about (still life) set-up has been pivotal in my thought process and planning.  It has opened up a world of ideas for me which has been a struggle for as long as I can remember. I could NEVER choose what to paint which is why I’ve always taken classes to learn how to paint.

So Matthew, another big thank you from me for all you do. The things you’ve taught me go way beyond pigment and brush. Keep doing what you do. You are a gift to all who find you.

Very conversational style, thorough explanations, detailed demonstrations, spot-on critiques and phenomenal ideas (and best  of all - unique approaches)!!!  There is a reason so many students in the portrait class took last month’s still life from you. Keep teaching!!!!

This has been a wonderful class, and I feel like I have learned a lot. Just watching your thought process and watching how you approach a painting and your brushwork has been wonderfully affirming for me, as I have always been pretty deliberate in the way I approach any hands-on activity. I admire loose painting, but it is just not in my nature. Also, the critiques have been great and seeing the work of others in the class has really been helpful.

I cannot express how much I enjoyed the entire experience.  The video was greatly helpful as I could watch it multiple times and close up shots were extremely valuable.  How you have structured it with live Zoom calls made it a highlight of my week for the last 6 weeks.  So grateful that you offered this class during what feels like a perpetual state of fear, suspension and chaos. I have never done a proper still life since I started about a year and a half ago, and not only I was intrigued by the process and what came out of it, but feel like I learned a ton from the instructions and perspective you shared.

I sure am learning a lot through your course. It’s pushing me to try to reach a new proficiency level. One doesn’t usually find this challenging level of detail in other loose-style based courses — sometimes it was actively discouraged. It has been a pleasure to work in a way that feels right for me.

I wanted to let you know that I found attending your online class more informative in a sense that I could see exactly what you were doing and how to mix paints.  Plus the fact that I live in Vancouver, BC and would never have had the opportunity to attend any of your classes! This was a positive for the pandemic situation.

It has been a wonderful journey that has helped me produce my best piece to date.  I hope I can do this level of quality work on my own again.

Thanks again for a wonderful workshop! I truly enjoyed learning from you. The unique way you paint is of great interest and value to me. Your approach and teaching style was different from other workshops I’ve attended and I found it well worth it.

The way you set up your videos was very well organized made viewing and learning time more valuable and easy to follow. It made finding different steps of the painting easy to access at any given time was well planned out. As a student, it was much appreciated.

This being my third workshop with you, has been a great experience. You are truly a teacher your method is very didactic, you made it easy to follow you. Meeting once a week and receiving your critiques/feedback over a  6 weeks period as well as learning from the other students was priceless.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching you paint, and being part of your conversations about art!

I also really appreciated how much you and I actually pain in a similar fashion, with slow, multiple glazes, masking edges/shapes, building color and value. I am always thinking I am looking for new ways to speed up, so it was tremendously validating to watch a master like you tackle things slowly like I do. I don’t think I will focus so much on learning faster techniques - just good ones that improve the product and make the process easier.

Those two things in particular were my wonderful take-aways!
